Did you know that Ternium has been using 100% natural gas as fuel for its steel-making processes since 2008?
Natural gas is the most environmental-friendly fuel, as it generates fewer emissions than others.
"Today, there is no other fossil fuel cleaner than natural gas and that's why it is considered the most eco-friendly fuel. We use it in Ternium because every day we aspire to have a better environmental performance", said Luis Rechy, Environmental Manager of Ternium Mexico.
"This fuel is eco-friendlier because it's formed mainly by methane CH4, which means that it generates fewer emissions when used as a fuel. Besides, it generates less soot."
In Ternium processes, natural gas may be used as fuel o even as raw material.
As fuel, it can be used for processes in furnaces, dryers, boilers, among others. And, as it is a cleaner fuel, it's the best option to substitute other fuels such as diesel, fuel oil, etc.
Ternium has invested in infrastructure and modern technology in order to make its processes more efficient.
"There have been some changes, such as changing the combustion equipment, modifying processes or even removing equipment to use only natural gas as fuel. Environmental legislation is stricter every day, that's why companies are trying to become more sustainable and Ternium is no exception," Rechy stated.
"We have been working on different things because, on one side, there is the dismantling of the equipment or complete systems, such as iron casting. On the other side, there are technological changes, such as the change from reheating pits to reheating furnaces in hot rolling at the Guerrero Plant."
According to the International Gas Union, natural gas generates up to 50% fewer emissions than coal and 20% less than oil. In addition, this fuel produces almost no sulfur dioxide and generates low nitrogen oxide emissions during combustion.
