The new partnership aims for a long-term relationship in the natural gas market, as well as the development of other opportunities between Petrobras and Ternium.
Ternium and Petrobras have signed a contract for the supply of natural gas in the free trading environment to serve Ternium unit located in Rio de Janeiro (RJ). The agreement marks Ternium’s transition from the captive market to the free market in the state of Rio de Janeiro, with firm natural gas supply provided by Petrobras and distribution by Naturgy.
“Petrobras and Ternium have significant synergies with the natural gas market as an important link between the companies. Regarding the current market opening context, the new Natural Gas product portfolio offers a diversified range of contracts in a more competitive environment. We always strive to be the best supply option for our commercial partners,” says the director of Energy Transition and Sustainability at Petrobras, Maurício Tolmasquim.
In this context, Petrobras and Ternium establish their first commercial relationship, partnering in the free natural gas market, focusing on developing solutions for enabling an open, competitive, transparent, sustainable, and increasingly developed trading environment in the country.
The companies also intend to develop other partnerships and synergies involving businesses in the natural gas sector, aligned with the decarbonization agenda of the steel industry.
“This agreement brings great opportunities for Ternium Brazil. The possibility of acquiring natural gas in the free market allows for greater competitiveness, generating more efficiency in resource management. It is a process improvement factor and promotes the decarbonization of steel, which is a strategic agenda for us,” says Titus Schaar, president of Ternium Brazil.
“The signing of this contract is an important step for the opening of the gas market in Rio de Janeiro to become a reality. It also promotes competitiveness in the state's industrial market. Ternium has been an important captive market customer for many years, and Naturgy has made every possible effort to make this migration happen as quickly as possible. Measures to stimulate competition tend to contribute to reducing the price of gas molecules, which will benefit all market segments. Naturgy will continue working to generate increasing competitiveness for its clients,” states Giselia Pontes, commercial director of Naturgy.
