On January 23, 2024, we marked a significant milestone: we obtained the certification of our laboratory located in CIT Palmar de Varela by the Colombian National Accreditation Organization (ONAC).
This recognition was granted for our excellent performance in mechanical and dimensional testing, and shows that, in Ternium, we continue working to optimize our operations, improve our products, and ensure their safety, functionality, and transparency. What does this accreditation consist of? ONAC's mission is to evaluate and accredit the competencies of organizations, projects, companies, and individuals. Its seal is a guarantee of suitability and quality in operations, as well as the implementation of good practices and rigorous compliance with international technical standards.
This accreditation - valid for three years and subject to annual reviews – comes after a recognition previously granted to one of the laboratories at the Manizales Plant. Thus, two of our experimentation and research areas have the approval, trust, and support of this organization.
Preparation and commitment: the keys to success
In Ternium we consider that this achievement was the result of a joint and continuous effort by the entire Palmar de Varela team. From the beginning, all the areas involved contributed to the process and complied with the necessary adjustments and requirements to achieve this distinction. But the road was complex. It began with a meticulous survey of requirements to comply with ONAC standards. However, the laboratory demonstrated its ability to perform mechanical and dimensional tests with precision and reliability.
What is the work done in the laboratories like?
The laboratories are spaces for research and development. Here we test and guarantee the performance and safety of our products, as well as compliance with norms and processes according to national and international standards.
In our five facilities, we have state-of-the-art equipment operated by specialized professionals. In addition, we develop projects together with universities and research centers in Latin America and the world.
Determination and excellence at Ternium
Yanet Acevedo, QA & Quality Information Manager of Ternium in Colombia, highlights that “this milestone reflects the joint effort of the entire Quality team of Palmar de Varela and demonstrates our firm determination to continue to maintain the highest standards in our mechanical and dimensional testing processes”.
This accreditation was also a training opportunity. It was a process that not only involved compliance with technical requirements but also staff training in testing standards and products. Eivy Jerez, Laboratory Manager, comments that “This work led us to implement technical criteria that before the accreditation were not contemplated in our process”.
The laboratory accreditation in Palmar de Varela validates Ternium's work and reaffirms our commitment to quality and excellence at all levels of the company. This is one more step on the road to continuous improvement that allows us to make Colombia strong.
